Three Cook IVC filters are the subject of the MDL consolidated in the federal district court in the Southern District of Indiana. They are the Gunther Tulip, the Cook Celect, and the Cook Platinum filters. These filters, each developed and marketed at different times but all touted for their “optional retrievability”—a marketing phrase meant to convey their safety either in the short term or the long term, but now known to be unsafe at any period of indwelling in the body.

Cook Celect
The Celect IVC filter was developed in an obvious attempt to solve the embedded filter epidemic the Gunther Tulip had created. It has no petals but instead has shorter arms toward the top of the filter. The same study that showed the Tulip perforation rate as 100% showed a similar perforation rate for the Celect. The problem is made worse, though, because the long and unprotected legs of the Celect have nothing to stop them from extending into other organs and vessels which they often do.many serious injuries and deaths have occurred from the progressive perforation of the Celect filter. It is also prone to fracture and when that occurs pieces of the filter may lodge themselves into the heart, lungs, and other organs.
