Elmiron Lawsuits

Elmiron is the only FDA-approved drug to treat interstitial cystitis or bladder pain syndrome. But, in 2018, scientists discovered that as little as six months of Elmiron use dramatically increased the risk of developing severe vision loss—a side effect the manufacturers of the drug knew, but hid from the FDA, doctors, patients, and the public.

What is Elmiron?

Elmiron is known scientifically as pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS).  It is used to treat interstitial cystitis (IC), a chronic bladder condition. The pain associated with interstitial cystitis may range from modest to severe and for those with consistent symptoms, Elmiron is often prescribed for extended periods of time.

What injuries does Elmiron cause?

The most serious complication associated with Elmiron is retinal maculopathy—a serious and irreversible eye condition. The symptoms of retinal maculopathy include:

  • Macular degeneration
  • Retinal changes
  • Retinal pigmentary endothelium changes
  • Pigmentary maculopathy
  • Small yellow or white spots on the retina
  • Night vision difficulties
  • Central vision loss
  • Difficulty reading
  • Difficulty adjusting to dim light
  • Difficulty driving
  • Poor light to dark adaptation
