Ben Martin Law Group Attorneys Secure $18M Award for Survivors of 2020 Crash
Three family members suffered lasting health issues in traffic accident
DALLAS – Attorneys with the Dallas-based personal injury firm Ben Martin Law Group recently helped a family secure an $18 million jury award stemming from a two-vehicle accident on Dec. 26, 2020.
The plaintiffs John Patrick Scott, 68, Kathryn Scott, 68, and their son, John Patrick Scott Jr. 32, suffered serious injuries when their car was struck by a vehicle driven by defendant Henry Watson.
Testimony in the case said Watson was intoxicated and driving recklessly at an excessive rate of speed when his vehicle ran a red light at Walnut Hill Lane and Midway Road in Dallas and struck the Scotts’ vehicle.
The Scotts had two family dogs with them at the time of the crash. The animals did not survive.
“This was a family that was on the road for the holidays who had no idea that their lives were about be turned upside down,” said Ben Martin Law Group founding partner Ben C. Martin. “The defendant in this case had no regard for the safety of everyone on the road with him the night of this collision, and the jury handed down a verdict and an award that reflected the egregiousness of that negligence.”
The damages awarded in this case were determined based on the plaintiffs’ loss of earning capacity, court costs, physical impairment and disfigurement, pain, mental anguish and medical expenses.
Mr. Watson was sentenced to 30 days in jail on charges of assault with a motor vehicle.
The case is John Patrick Scott, Kathryn Irish Scott, and John Patrick Scott Jr. v. Henry Weatherby Watson, cause number DC 21-10651, in the 192nd Judicial District Court of Dallas County.
